What is a Vertical?

a lineup of Sierra nevada bigfoot ale vertical tasting

Did you know that some styles of beer can be enjoyed several years after being bottled?

Much like how wine can vary with different vintages of the same style, beer can develop complex and richer flavor over time.

Certain styles of beer make for fantastic cellar candidates. Barleywine and lambics can store for decades while stouts bring on different notes after a few years of aging. In addition, sour ales will store nicely as will many high ABV beers.

If you do want to try to set up a vertical tasting, be sure that you are keeping your aging beers at cellar temperatures (perfect for a crawlspace or basement.) and upright (although corked beers like lambics are recommended to be stored sideways like wine.)

Of course, you can save a few years time and enjoy a vertical tasting sooner than later by winning some of the goodies on our auction page! We are offering a few verticals including some Thomas Hardy’s Ale and a few verticals from local and national breweries.
